Outside Lands Offers More Than Music

San Francisco’s music festival – a haven for food, art, wine, and beer

Some San Francisco hotels offer Outside Lands music festival packages – but book early, because they sometimes sell out.
San Francisco’s blockbuster music festival, Outside Lands, has become a beloved annual tradition since it began in 2008. But music isn’t the only reason to attend this summer festival, which takes place in Golden Gate Park, August 8-10, 2014. Outside Lands offers a real taste of San Francisco by showcasing the city’s food, art, wine, and beer.

Each year, Outside Lands adds more local restaurants, wineries, breweries, artists, and community organizations to its lineup, including two special areas: Beer Lands, a craft beer dedicated space curated by Magnolia Brewery, and Wine Lands, complete with vendors selling local artisanal cheese plates and fresh charcuterie.

Food lovers can hop between vendors that represent the city’s restaurants, food trucks, food carts, and pop-up restaurants. Think San Francisco restaurant Rich Table, which participated in 2013’s festival, selling unique delicacies such as sardine chips, porcini mushroom doughnuts, lamb poutine, and fried mac and cheese.

Outside Lands is also an artistic oasis for everyone from aficionados to casual browsers. Highlights from 2013 included San Francisco-born Ricky Watts, who featured a brightly colored spray paint mural, and a Samba street circus full of Brazilian drumming and colorful characters.

The festival is also dedicated to community organizations and sustainability efforts, and several San Francisco-based companies have been known to set up booths or areas at Outside Lands.

And best of all, music is everywhere. Performers at the 2013 festival included Gary Clark Jr., Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson and Family, and The National.

No details on tickets or the 2014 lineup have been released. However, once tickets for Outside Lands go on sale, they tend to sell out fast. In addition, some city hotels offer packages but these are also in high demand. If you plan to attend, be sure to plan ahead.
