Visitors to San Felipe should visit the Valley of the Giants, an outdoor garden of towering saguaro cacti.
The coastal town of San Felipe, Mexico, began as a small fishing port on the Sea of Cortez about 100 years ago. It started making a name for itself among American sport fisherman, which inspired a boost in the town’s tourism offerings.

Today, San Felipe is known for the quality of its blue shrimp. One of its most popular events, the annual Shrimp Festival, is held each November, drawing crowds. Several days of festivities mean booths offering regional cuisine and crafts, evening cooking demonstrations, folkloric performances, and live music for dancing.

During the rest of the year, San Felipe offers a laid-back atmosphere for tourists, particularly suited to those craving beachside walks and lazy outdoor meals.

One must-do excursion is a drive out to the Valley of the Giants, an outdoor garden focused on towering saguaro cacti that can reach up to 55 feet tall. Visitors can hike a one-mile trail within the park, but would be wise to bring bottled water along. In addition, only 4×4 vehicles should take on the trail.

There’s plenty of accommodations options in San Felipe, including about 1,000 hotel rooms, condos, and RV hook-up space. Most hotels offer very basic service, but if you’re looking for a resort, there are a few options. Try Hotel El Cortez, San Felipe Resort & Marina or El Dorado Ranch, located about seven miles outside of town.
