The Draws of Stuttgart

From automotive museums to beer and wine festivals, Stuttgart offers fine attractions for visitors

Germany’s second-largest beer festival, the Stuttgart Beer Festival, takes place in Stuttgart each year in late September.
Stuttgart, Germany has a claim to fame in the automotive vein – the city is known as the cradle of the automotive industry, thanks to Karl Benz’s invention of the automobile and motorcycle in the late 19th century. But the city’s draw for visitors doesn’t stop there, as annual beer and wine festivals make Stuttgart even more worthy of a visit.

Car Museums
Stuttgart is the only city in the world with two major car museums, both of which showcase some of the most sought-after automobiles on earth. Sports-car fans will certainly want to stop by the Porsche Museum to further fuel their passion. Car lovers, architecture enthusiasts and history buffs will all enjoy a trip to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, where visitors are transported back to 1886, the birth year of the car. More than 125 years of automotive history are on display through classic collections, reportage, race cars, and even a simulation ride. The building itself is a point of interest as well, designed by Dutch firm UNStudio van Berkel & Bos. Its glass and aluminum structure looks something like a double-helix, with weaving concrete spiral ramps and two futuristic pod-like elevators.

Beer and Wine Festivals

Each year, Stuttgart celebrates a different element of its culture, hosting beer and wine festivals. From late August through early September, the Stuttgart Wine Village celebrates the region’s food and wine scene, offering delicious tastes of both in a festive atmosphere. In 2014, the festival will run from Aug. 27 – Sept. 7. Not long after, beer steps into the spotlight at the Stuttgart Beer Festival. The second largest beer festival in the country, the event features live bands, carnival rides, fair food, and enormous beer tents. The 2014 edition of the festival will take place Sept. 26 – Oct. 12.
