KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is offering passengers who visit Amsterdam in September a handy gadget: the KLM Care Tag. The smart audio luggage tag automatically provides visitors with location information based on verbal tips on how to travel the city. The specially designed location-aware audio luggage tag consists of an offline GPS module and a speaker.
While travelers are walking, or cycling through the city, the care tag offers the right tips at the right location, and at the right time. Throughout Amsterdam, KLM plotted the voices of their caring crew at spots where people can use some extra assistance. A visitor can simply attach the tag to her/his luggage or clothes to get started.
KLM’s desire to be the most customer-centric European airline is what led to the development of a device that expands the service of its crew beyond planes and the airport. The KLM crew filled the KLM Care Tag with hundreds of practical tips about the city of Amsterdam, including insightful tips ranging from busy intersections with a lot of cyclists, where and how to lock your bike, and when you should watch out for pickpockets. Additional lighthearted tips are also featured, and can provide important information, such as where to taste local food for free, where to see great street art, or where to rent a bike or boat. With the Care Tag, travelers always have someone to guide them through the city.
Over the last few years, Amsterdam has rapidly become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. More than one million people visited Amsterdam this past January, and by 2025, this number is expected to increase by 30 percent. Together with Paris and Lisbon, Amsterdam hosts the most visitors per inhabitant in Europe. The KLM care tag will become available in September, and can be ordered online for free by passengers who travel to Amsterdam. The first batch of Care Tags will only be available in English, however additional Care Tags will available in Chinese, Portuguese, German and Russian later this year.
