So you’ve arrived! Your first Mardi Gras. It will be an experience, for sure, and here’s 5 cool things to know before you go.

1. Learn about this history Mardi Gras. Before you get on the plane, download some info about the history of Mardi Gras in Louisiana. Historical insights into this amazing celebration will help you better understand what’s happening.

2. In New Orleans, it’s more than just Bourbon Street. If you’re attending Mardi Gras in New Orleans, no doubt you’ve read about the craziness on Bourbon Street and in the French Quarter. If you want to see the floats and catch the throws, head up St. Charles Avenue to the Garden District and Uptown, where the scene is a little less crazy.

3. Dress up – in costume! Most everyone dons some sort of costume for during Mardi Gras, and it’s truly anything goes. At the very least, where a mask, feathers, and beads. And remember, the Mardi Gras color are purple, green, and gold.

4. Throws. You’ll hear this word bandied about quite a bit during Fat Tuesday. “Throws” are gifts thrown from riders on floats. The most common throws are plastic beads, doubloons, stuffed animals, and aluminum coins.
