A New Zealand getaway fit for royalty

Friday
Start at the top – literally! Take a drive up to Mount Victoria Lookout for panoramic views of the city and harbor. Wellington’s beautiful Botanic Garden is another sight worth seeing, reached by historic Cable Car. Back in town, it’s time for a little culture – the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa offers an innovative glimpse at local life, while the City Gallery Wellington is a world-class space for contemporary New Zealand and international art. Finish off with dinner at one of Wellington’s best restaurants, such as the contemporary and elegant Logan Brown, or locally-minded fine dining staple The White House.
Saturday
For some morning shopping, high fashion awaits in The Old Bank Arcade, while a top-hatted doorman is on hand to welcome you to department store heaven at Kirkcaldie & Stains. Next, hop over the hills to the Wairarapa Wine Region, dotted with boutique wineries perfect for an afternoon spent sampling the fine red wines that have made the area famous. Once dinnertime rolls around, more of Wellington’s finest dining can be sampled at Boulcott Street Bistro, perhaps followed by a performance of the New Zealand Ballet or a trip to the Opera House.
Sunday
Before heading out, a trip to the Parliament Buildings will be reminiscent of the royals’ visit, where architectural styles include Edwardian neoclassical and Victorian-Gothic. Alternately, spend some time along the Kapiti Coast, where crowd-free beaches are a local favorite for summer play days.
