An Insider’s itinerary for a weekend getaway along the Grand Strand

If you don’t mind skipping the beach, winter is great for visiting Myrtle Beach without the crowds, at rock-bottom prices.
At the center of South Carolina’s Grand Strand lies Myrtle Beach, one of the most quintessential American beach towns in history. Spend a weekend experiencing the best of the town and its surroundings with these ideas for the ideal getaway.

Check into your hotel on Friday, whether it be the comfortable, oceanfront Embassy Suites Myrtle Beach or the luxurious five-star Marina Inn at Grande Dunes. Once you’re settled, head straight to the beach to get into the vacation mindset. Some of the best strips of sand can be found at Myrtle Beach State Park, Crescent Beach, Cherry Grove, and Windy Hill. In the evening, walk to Broadway at the Beach – which offers tons of dining and shopping, the Ripley’s Aquarium, and nightclubs – or head to the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk for a lovely stroll and dinner at one of the restaurants overlooking the water, such as Captain Dave’s Dockside Restaurant.

Make this day one of exploration around the nearby towns. In Georgetown, explore the past at the 18th-century Hampton Plantation State Historic Site or Hopsewee Plantation. At Murrells Inlet, visit the lovely Huntington Beach State Park or Brookgreen Gardens, the largest and oldest sculpture garden in the U.S. Alternatively, head to North Myrtle Beach to explore by kayak or canoe, or take a relaxing bike ride around laid-back Pawleys Island. Good options for dinner include upscale The Parson’s Table or Sea Blue. There’s also plenty of local entertainment to keep you busy – comedy and music are the draw at the Carolina Opry, while casino cruises offer the chance to gamble in international waters.

Before packing up, it’s time to tee off. In an area with more than 100 golf courses, you’ll have your pick of greens for an early morning tee time. Anything along the Southern Strand is a reliable choice, with courses designed by names like Nicklaus, Fazio, Player, and Strantz, though other fine options include the grand Pine Lakes Country Club or the plush Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Finally, grab a bite of Southern comfort food at Prosser’s BBQ or stellar seafood at local favorite Rockefellers Raw Bar.
