Traveling through Canada by Train

Amtrak, Rocky Mountaineer, and VIA Rail all offer a wide range of routes and itineraries to suit most budgets and travel times.
Romantic notions surrounding the concept of train travel abound. And this mode of transportation is becoming increasingly popular for those who want to experience vast stretches of Canada’s culture during both short and more leisurely holidays.

“Unlike by car, where you miss a lot of the scenery by driving, the train has a unique access to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world,“ says Karen Wiseman of Rocky Mountaineer – a tour operator that operates rail journeys throughout Canada. Her sentiments seemed to be shared by many, as the art of travel by train experiences a recent resurgence.

Rail travel offers space, convenience, comfort and the idea that travellers are indulging in a more environmentally friendly vacation. With onboard sleeping cars, first-rate dining and the ability to walk around, mix and mingle while speeding across the countryside, its no wonder trains are enjoying a growing fan base.

Many say some of the best things about train travel are family togetherness and the lifelong friendships forged along the way with other like-minded travelers, who you can’t help but get to know well during longer treks.  Says Wiseman, “When traveling by train, the journey is just as important as the destination.”

A vast and well-maintained network of rails helps ensure a smooth and comfortable ride to the wide variety of iconic Canadian destinations. From Vancouver to Quebec and all points in between, passengers take in the scenery through large picture windows from the comfort of their seat, and through the 360-degree domes atop the special viewing cars.
