Alberta cattle drives offer an authentic experience of a long-standing tradition

For those looking to experience the nature of Alberta, there may be no better way than to jump on a horse and participate in an authentic cowboy cattle drive. Once a common occurrence in the American West and Canada, most cattle drives have now been relegated to tourism opportunities for all range of casual riders.

Cattle drives are real working vacations that feed the dreams of those who want to indulge in their inner cowboy or cowgirl. Randy Donohue, co-owner of Alberta’s Lone Pine Ranch and an operator of Sierra West Cabins and Ranch Vacations says guests really enjoy the opportunity to meet others with the same ambitions from all over the world. “Everybody is brought together by the same dream,” he said. “And it’s really satisfying to help make those dreams come true.”

Riding the open prairie surrounded by beautiful scenery during the day is complimented by campfires, delicious dinners and cowpoke entertainment at night. Overnights are spent in bunkhouse-style accommodations or self-contained cabins.

Fly-fishing, hiking and other riding experiences are often available as are opportunities to witness some of the world’s finest rodeos. Every July, top cowboys converge on Calgary for the Calgary Stampede. Plenty of small-town rodeos that provide great action take place multiple times a week throughout the summer.
