The best free things to do on Kauai

Many Kauai hotels put on complimentary shows, classes, and other entertainment perfect for visitors on a budget.
Between its stunning natural beauty and complimentary culture activities, Kauai island is a treasure trove for travelers on a budget. Free sites, cultural offerings, and outdoor activities make it easy to enjoy the island without breaking the bank.

Take in the island’s lush scenery, Waimea Canyon’s amazing panorama views are not to be missed. View-seekers should also head to Kalalau Lookout for a valley-meets-ocean view, or check out 80-foot-high Wailua Falls.

Kauai’s many hiking trails can also be accessed for free, with routes ranging from easy walks to challenging treks. Hikers will be treated to hidden valleys, streams, and waterfalls. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast is a great option for experienced hikers.

And, of course, Kauia’s 50 plus miles of beaches are also free of charge. Visitors can try out up to 43 beaches around the island, from Poipu on the southern shore to Anini in the north and Polihale to the west.

Visitors seeking a taste of Hawaii’s culture can see many Kauai landmarks without charge, including Prince Kuhio Park and Wailua River. Menehune Fishpond dates back centuries, and Lydgate State Park features the remains of an ancient temple.

In addition, many Kauai hotels offer complimentary live music, ceremonies and even classes. For free entertainment, head to Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa, Harbor Mall in Lihue and Poipu Shopping Villages to take in weekly hula shows. Free festivals also take place throughout the year celebrating arts, crafts, cooking and storytelling.
