Ideas for the perfect Costa Rica family vacation

Families visiting San José can enjoy a bevy of cultural offerings, including museums, theaters and recreation centers. Take in a performance at the National Theater, or visit the Gold Museum to see Pre Columbian, Costa Rican artwork. At the National Museum, families get a history lesson in Costa Rica’s past, while the Children’s Museum will take the whole gang on an interactive learning adventure.
To get the family outdoors, hiking is always a favorite option in Costa Rica’s many beautiful protected areas, including national parks and biological reserves. Other nature-based activities range from fishing and surfing to tropical forest treks and scenic horseback rides.
In the water, a popular activity for adventurous families (particularly those with slightly older children or teens) is rafting. Popular rivers for rafting include the Pacuare, Reventazón, Sarapiquí and Corobicí rivers. Given Costa Rica’s warm water temperatures throughout the year, other great ideas include boat or kayak trips as well as snorkeling or diving.
