Top Brasilia Attractions
Brasilia is considered an avant-garde city in terms of its architectural design. One of the city’s most striking features – and a must-see for anyone in town – is Três Poderes Square, or Three Powers Square, where the Planalto Palace, the Patria Pantheon and the National Congress can be found. Other architectural highlights include the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia and the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, two of the city’s most iconic structures. Both structures were designed by Oscar Niemeyer, who worked on many of the city’s landmark buildings.
Another must-visit site in Brasilia is the Dom Bosco Shrine, which was designed by Lúcio Costa. Visit during evening mass, when the sanctuary is illuminated by its stunning chandelier, made up of 7,400 glass light holders that came all the way from the Italian island of Murano.
After your architecture tour, visit the Guará Open Market, a major attraction for the city as well as one of its most traditional fairs. Nearly 600 stands offer a wide variety of products to shoppers, including regional food, gifts and crafts. The market is open from Thursday to Sunday.
The culture-rich National Museum is also worth a stop, both for its historical displays and fascinating design both inside and out. And, if you need a place to relax, the Parque Nacional de Brasilia is a lovely place for downtime, with natural swimming pools and a variety of wildlife roaming around.
