Authentic South Pacific experiences await on the islands of Fiji

For an authentic taste of Fijian culture, consider visiting the outer islands, such as the Mamanucas and Yasawas.
An 11-hour flight from Los Angeles will bring you worlds away from any life you’ve ever known. In Fiji, spectacular scenery, beautiful beaches, authentic culture and an emphasis on hospitality are waiting, especially on the outer islands.

Nadi is a popular island with the larger hotels, close to the airport on the main island of Viti Levu. A more authentic experience, however, can be found on the outer islands, particularly the Mamanucas and Yasawas, which can be reached by plane or ferry from Nadi.

Those visiting the Yasawas might consider staying at Yasawa Island Resort & Spa, a 35-minute flight from Nadi. The resort offers a typical out-island experience, with 18 beachfront bungalows, rustic luxury and a doting staff that delivers personalized attention, made even more possible by the two-to-one staff-to-guest ratio.

Guests can enjoy daily boat excursions across the island for cave swims, scuba diving, village visits and private beach picnics. The resort’s main draws are its secluded and serene atmosphere, particularly for those seeking a romantic getaway. There are no cars, televisions or noise – worlds away from most of our daily lives.

Until June of 2014, visitors to Yasawa Island can book an all-inclusive “Stay Pay Package,” including at least three nights’ stay in a Fijian style bungalow, three meals a deal and all activities except scuba diving, sport fishing and spa treatments.

Since the airport is on Nadi, travelers might consider making a stop there before or after their island-hopping trips. Possible experiences here include a Sigatoka River Safari, taking guests on a speedboat ride up the Sigatoka River to enjoy the scenery and a glimpse of local village life; or a visit to a riverfront village to see a ritual kava ceremony. The traditional rite involves drinking the narcotic kava root, crushed and mixed with water.
