Jumex Museum Opens in Mexico City

The new Jumex Museum in Mexico City’s upscale Polanco neighborhood is adding to the city’s already impressive collection of more than 175 museums. The museum was designed by renowned British architect David Chipperfield with the purpose of showcasing the Jumex Foundation Contemporary Art collection. Included in the collection are the works of worldwide artists, with a concentration on artists from Mexico and Latin America.

With five levels, the Jumex Museum claims the title of largest private contemporary art space in Latin America. The Jumex Foundation Contemporary Art collection features approximately 2,000 pieces of contemporary art spanning from the 1990s to today, and the museum will display both permanent and rotating exhibits. Visitors to the museum can see works by contemporary artists including Miguel Calderon, Jose Davila and Cerith Wyn Evans, as well as pieces by international artists such as Carl Andre, John Baldessari, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, and Andy Warhol.

Inaugural exhibits at the museum include “James Lee Byars: 1/2 an Autobiography,” an elaborate monographic exhibit dedicated to the conceptual artist James Lee Byars. In addition, visitors can enjoy “Las Ideas de Gamboa,” which focuses on Mauricio Marcin’s investigation of the work of Fernando Gamboa. The project showcases various exhibits and cultural efforts of Gamboa, an artist and curator who is considered one of the most important individuals of Mexico’s artistic heritage. Both exhibits will be on display into 2014.
