Combining the arts of beer-making, pub-crawling, and game-viewing in South Africa

beer with one for seeing African wildlife in their natural habitats.
The 13-day South Africa Hops and Hippos Tour delves into everything from Cape Town’s 17th century brewing origins (a woman in town still brews using century-old methods) to the country’s booming industry today. Brewery stops include Newlands Brewery in Cape Town, Birkenhead and Napier Breweries in Hermanus, and the Firkin and Zululand Breweries in Durban. Behind-the-scenes tours, chats with brewmasters, a visit to the SAB World of Beer museum in Johannesburg, and plenty of tasting along the way will have you brimming over with knowledge and appreciation for the not-so-simple beverage.
Just when a change of activity would do your body good, you’ll spend three days getting acquainted with South Africa’s Big Five on game drives and bush walks through the Thanda Private Game Reserve. Accommodations over the two weeks include upscale digs in a converted 1904 Cape Town waterfront warehouse, a bed & breakfast in Durban, a hotel in the happening Melrose Arch neighborhood of Johannesburg, and one of two choices – the main lodge or the tented camps – at the Game Reserve.
