Major League Baseball visits Sydney in 2014
The games will take place on March 22 and 23, and will count as real games. This marks only the sixth time in history that MLB games have been played outside the United States, and the first regular season games to be played in Australia.
Sandra Chipchase, CEO of Destination NSW, was instrumental in bringing the MLB games to Sydney, and predicts that the games will bring in approximately $13 million to the local economy.
“The grass for the outfield is currently being farmed in western New South Wales,” she said. It will be installed in February to comply with MLB regulations.”
The 2014 Opening Series is set to feature the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two games will be played at the 45,000-seat Sydney Cricket Ground stadium, and will be broadcast back to the U.S. on Fox and on Australian television.
