In a city with more than 1,000 restaurants, these 5 are at the top of the pack

In Macau, some must-try street food includes pork chop buns and Pastéis de Nata (Portuguese egg tarts).
Like Las Vegas, Macau is a casino-based destination that is gaining attention for its exceptional culinary scene. More than 1,000 restaurants are currently on offer in this Chinese city-state – 74 of which are starred in the “2014 Michelin Guide Hong Kong & Macau.”

Much of the cuisine features a blend of Chinese, Japan, and Southeast Asian influences – and visitors can find restaurants specializing in Cantonese, Sichuan, Beijing, Shanghai, Hongkongese, Taiwanese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Burmese, Vietnamese, and Thai fare. European influences also make an appearance, with Spanish and Portuguese cuisine thrown into the mix.

Among the many offerings, the following five restaurants are at the top of the pack.

Xin, in the Sheraton Macau:
This eatery serves distinctive Chinese dining, elevating familiar hot pot cuisine to a new level. Each diner is afforded their own pot, selecting their preferred type of broth and choice of ingredients.

Jade Dragon, in the City of Dreams: The menus here are crafted by executive chef Kwok Fung to reflect the best ingredients of each season.

Gosto, at the Galaxy Macau: Chef de cuisine Mario Gil counts Portuguese fare among his specialties, and serves up an authentic portion of it at this restaurant.

Albergue 1601:  Head to this eatery for an intimate dining experience in the heart of old Macau. In keeping with the melting-pot style of Macau, this establishment offers a Mediterranean menu that ranges from jumbo scallops with garlic and Portuguese sausage to African chicken, stuffed cabbage rolls, and salted codfish.

Grand Lisboa Hotel:  More than 200 dishes are offered at this hotel, thanks to one of the largest buffet selections in the region. At dinner, be sure to try the roast rib eye, Mongolian barbeque beef, and roasted pork.
