There is a lot to love about Thailand, so it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular Southeast Asian destination to visit. With beautiful nature, impressive beaches, delicious cuisine, plenty of shopping markets to explore, and many unique cultural attractions—the fun never ends. If you’re dreaming up the perfect Thailand getaway, we know the coolest towns that you’ll want to add to your itinerary. Check out some of our favorite spots:
Pai
If you plan to spend time in the northern part of the country, a visit to Pai is a must. This town sits along the banks of the Pai River and no matter where you look there is beauty everywhere. Be sure to spend time adventuring at the Mhor Phaeng Waterfall—where you can slide down the falls. We also recommend snacking on delicious street food and shopping for handmade art and crafts at the Pai Walking Street night market. Pai also has several natural springs, making it possible for you to de-stress and treat your body right after a full day of fun.
Ao Nang

Are you searching for a beachside town with bright blue water and beautiful beaches? Ao Nang is the place to go. It’s in the southern portion of the country, located in Krabi Province. This town has a mix of everything, and it’s a favorite spot for tourists. For those looking to relax beach or poolside, devour local eats, and take advantage of daily massages and spa treatments, there is plenty of that found here. For the more adventure-seeking individuals who want to island hop, go snorkeling, or take part in a sunset cruise, Ao Nang also offers many fun and exciting activities to enjoy.
Lamphun

For those looking for a cool town off-the-beaten-path, Lamphun is worth a visit. This town is located in Northern Thailand, just south of the famous city Chiang Mai. It’s one of the oldest areas in Thailand. Full of history, Lamphun offers visitors a chance to learn about and explore the local culture. There are many temples to visit, including the impressive Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. It’s also full of beauty—from rainforests to mountains to waterfalls and caves—it’s an excellent smaller destination away from busy city life.
Kanchanaburi

Another cool town to visit is Kanchanaburi, which can be found in western Thailand. This town also offers an escape from the bigger cities. With a day spent at Sai Yok National Park, you can take a walk and enjoy the many forests and waterfalls. For those interested in history, a trip to Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is a must. The cemetery pays tribute to the thousands who lost their lives during WWII. You’ll also want to spend time taking in the stunning river views.
While Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket may be the first cities that come to mind when you think of Thailand, this amazing country is full of more than big cities. The cool smaller towns are gorgeous and have plenty to do—making for a memorable experience for travelers of all ages.
